The Charapita chilli comes from the Peruvian Amazon and counts as one of the most intense wild chillies of South America. Its tiny, bright yellow berries bring up to 100,000 Scoville – combined with fruity, citrusy, floral aromas.
- Category: chilli, whole
- Taste: fruity, citrusy, floral, lingering heat
- Use: Lomo Saltado, ceviche, salsas, stocks, chilli oil
- Format: 25 g jar, 200 g stand-up pouch
My tip: Cook two or three whole berries along in the Lomo Saltado – no more. The heat builds slowly and works in a targeted way.
Origin & Story
The Charapita chilli comes from the Peruvian Amazon, near the border with Brazil. It grows wild, not cultivated – and has been hand-harvested by local gatherers for generations. The small, bright yellow berries are considered one of the most intense wild chillies of South America. With a heat of up to 100,000 Scoville, it brings not only fire but a fruity, citrusy aroma profile with floral notes.
Highlights
Only whole, intact berries from wild harvesting are processed. Drying takes place directly after harvest under controlled conditions in the sun – no technical aids, no additives. The aroma is bright, fruity and precise, the heat builds slowly and stays persistently present. Processing is done single-batch at Manufaktur Funke. The exact selection remains my secret.
Quality
The Charapita chillies come from pure wild harvesting in the Peruvian Amazon. The berries are carefully hand-picked, sorted and dried – no stem, no breakage, no anti-caking agents or preservatives.
The best spices have always inspired me to create new dishes. Only the best is good enough to reach the very top – for you, in your kitchen.
100% natural. Just the way I use it myself, every day.
Tip from Tobias Funke
I cook two or three whole berries along in the Lomo Saltado – no more. Afterwards you can remove them or leave them in, depending on your courage. The heat comes delayed, but targeted. Ideal combined with cumin and onion.
Recommended use
- For Peruvian dishes such as Lomo Saltado or ceviche
- In salsas, stews or sauces with a tropical note
- Cook whole or steep lightly crushed
- For oils, stocks or chilli vinegar
