Long Pepper “Lampung”
Ab CHF 11.–
Long Pepper was already a luxury spice in ancient Rome and comes from the Indonesian island of Java. Its elongated fruit spikes bring sweetish, spicy aromas with notes of cardamom, cocoa and cinnamon. The heat builds slowly and lingers for a long time.
- Category: Pepper, whole
- Taste: Warm, sweetish-spicy, slightly bitter, with lingering heat
- Use: Curries, lamb, braised vegetables, chocolate, chai, cheese
- Format: 60 g jar / 200 g pouch
My tip: Briefly toasted, coarsely broken and infused in oil – ideal for butter, hummus or over honey-glazed carrots.
Origin & Story
Long Pepper (Piper longum) is regarded as the original form of pepper – it was already known as a luxury spice in ancient Rome, long before the black pepper common today spread across Europe. Our Lampung pepper comes from Indonesia, more precisely from the island of Java, where it grows wild in tropical forests. Its name derives from the Lampung region, a traditional spice-trading centre with a long pepper tradition.
Highlights
Long pepper has an unmistakable shape – elongated, branched, with a dense structure. When crushed in a mortar it releases a warm, sweetish-spicy aroma with notes of cardamom, cocoa, cinnamon and a slightly bitter heat. Its heat builds slowly and lingers on the palate – ideal for dishes with depth, sweetness or creaminess.
Quality
Our long pepper comes from controlled wild harvesting on Java. The fruit spikes are hand-picked at full ripeness, sun-dried and sorted at the manufactory – no stems, no breakage, in small batches. All-natural, bold, full of character.
The best spices have always inspired me to create new dishes. Only the best is good enough to reach the very top – for you, in your kitchen. 100% natural. Just the way I use it myself, every day.
Tip from Tobias Funke
"For me, long pepper has something textural about it – almost like a spice with structure. I toast it briefly, break it into pieces and let it infuse in warm oil. I use it to flavour butter, hummus or cream sauces. Over carrots glazed with honey or on mature cheese it also brings a subtly spicy length that surprises."
