Ground Turmeric
Ab CHF 10.–
Ground turmeric brings a warm-spiced, earthy and slightly floral note into your kitchen – with the typical, intensely golden-yellow colour from natural curcumin. The finely ground powder is mild, rounded and has only a gentle bitter note. Ideal for curries, soups, rice dishes or spiced butter, where it brings depth and colour.
Category: spice
Taste: mildly spiced, earthy, woody-floral, slightly bitter
Use: curries, rice, sauces, dips, drinks
Format: 60 g jar / 500 g stand-up pouch
My tip: Warm it gently in a little oil or butter – that way the curcumin dissolves optimally and the aroma binds better with the dish.
Origin & Story
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is one of the oldest known spice plants of Asia. As long as around 10,000 years ago the root found its way into the kitchen in India, when people began to use plants systematically for food and healing. About 5,000 years ago turmeric became one of the central spices of Indian cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine. In the 14th century Marco Polo brought the intensely yellow powder from Southeast Asia to Europe. The striking colour gave turmeric many names: yellow root, saffron root, Indian saffron or yellow ginger. To this day it is used not only in the kitchen but also in the food industry as a natural colouring for pasta, mustard or rice dishes.
My turmeric comes from Madagascar, where the rhizomes thrive under ideal conditions and are carefully processed.
Highlights
Turmeric's bright colour comes from the natural pigment curcumin. The aroma is mildly spiced, woody-floral, earthy, with a fine bitter note. Gently dried and finely ground, turmeric unfolds a rounded, slightly peppery aroma without dull bitterness. It is versatile: as a base for curry blends, in stews and rice dishes, for spiced butter or drinks like "golden milk".
Quality
Only the inner rhizome of the plant, rich in essential oils, is used. The roots from Madagascar are carefully dried, finely ground and filled in small batches in my manufactory. Free from additives, all-natural and of unadulterated quality.
The best spices have always inspired me to create new dishes. Only the best is good enough to reach the very top – for you, in your kitchen. 100% natural. Just the way I use it myself, every day.
Tip from Tobias Funke
I like to use turmeric where you don't expect it: in a spiced butter of browned butter, lime zest and a little cumin. On a fresh corn cob or with roasted carrots this creates golden depth – entirely without curry.
